Hello.
I had something interesting happen while I was driving around, listening to
he radio.
he station I usually listen to in this area is 105.7 The Hawk, which is a
lassic rock station. I was stopped at a light on route 9 in Howell, and
tarted picking up 105.7 The Beat, an R&B station located in Meridian, MS. A
uick point-to-point map search tells me that is over 900 miles. I didn't
hink that really happened with FM. (Especially in a car with only an
n-glass antenna)
As usual, please pardon my ignorance if this is nothing spectacular. I am
nexperienced, so such occurrences are like magic to me.

Hi Joe,
My guess is you experienced 'skip' due to a temperature inversion. The
south
nd central US experienced a very hot day yesterday which causes this.
Some technical info is here ...
ttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inversion_(meteorology)
Scroll down to "Electromagnetic Radiation (Radio-TV"
Your stop was most likely in a weak signal area for the Hawk, which allowed
the
ther station to over ride the local one.
Hams get excited when this happens as it allows some long distance
ommunication.
When we had TV channels 3-6-10, etc, and used TV antennas, this was common
uring the warm months. Sometimes you would see a station from Texas over
ride
he local one.

In radar we called it "ducting". I worked extensively with a 400 Mhz. radar
not too far from FM frequencies) and we had complaints from the Navy off
outh America that they were picking up targets at over 120 miles where
here were only land masses, clearly way beyond line of sight. Happened
lso with early radar in England where they often, in the summer, picked up
ountains in Southern Europe at 300 miles and beyond.
