Good Day All-
First, on Tuesday, April 12th, the Symbol Technologies Amateur Radio Club (STARC) will be hosting a presentation by George Flanagan, W2KRM, at Motorola in Holtsville at 6:00pm.
All Amateurs, wireless enthusiasts and history buffs are invited to attend; please RSVP to w2sbl at motorolasolutions.com for registration and visitor badge access for non-Motorolans.
The topic of the presentation is: “The Great Sayville Wireless”
In 1911, on a 102-acre site in West Sayville, the German firm Telefunken began construction of America’s most technologically advanced commercial wireless station, the first able to consistently span the Atlantic. Service opened to great fanfare, with messages exchanged between President Wilson and the German Kaiser. At the outbreak of World War I when Germany’s cables were cut, Sayville became America’s only direct link with Germany and target of espionage allegations galore.
The program is illustrated with many vintage photographs of the site, with its 500-foot tower – the tallest structure on LI at the time - and apparatus, such as the 60-kW spark and 100-kW HF Alternator transmitters, which will be described in detail.
George Flanagan, W2KRM, is a retired mechanical engineer and member of the Long Island Radio & TV Historical Society.
