To follow up on my notice of lunch with the son of the founder of Boonton
Radio Corporation, Robert Loughlin is a fine man with a terrific memory.
Most of his recollections have to do with the sale to Hewlett-Packard, he
being part of the package, but he remembers his father's associations with
Armstrong, Stuart Ballantine, Sarnoff, etc. He loaned me a set of histories
of the town's radio heritage dating from the early 1970s when Boonton marked
the 50th anniversary of the Radio Frequency Laboratories, and I'll bring
those tonight (flooding and downed powerlines permitting) to make copies for
Ray. I also encouraged him to consider InfoAge as the site for the
electronic equipment he has from the company.
In other news, out of the blue comes a lengthy, self-published book:
Marconi: Father of Wireless, Grandfather of Radio, Great-Grandfather of the
Cell Phone, The Story of the Race to Control Long-Distance Wireless
(www.amazon.com/Marconi-Wireless-Grandfather-Great-Grandfather-Long-Distance
/dp/1439263906/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8
<http://www.amazon.com/Marconi-Wireless-Grandfather-Great-Grandfather-Long-D
istance/dp/1439263906/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1268349645&sr=1-1>
&s=books&qid=1268349645&sr=1-1) The author emailed me yesterday to spread
the word. Until I see the sources used it's difficult to evaluate but the
author is a lawyer in corporate finance and the strength of his work should
be his understanding of the relation between Marconi's technology and its
commercialization. I encouraged him to prepare a Powerpoint file for
lectures so if the club is interested he could journey down from NYC.
Dennis Waters, who researched and made a presentation on the AT&T
radiotelephone antenna farm in Lawrenceville in February had a huge
audience, much larger than the usual at the L'ville Historical Society. He
has done terrific research and produced a nicely organized story that club
members would undoubtedly enjoy.
Finally, can Ray or Jerry tell me where or how to locate an unbound copy of
RCA Review vol. 8, no 4 (December 1947)? A former Library board member
collected an entire run of the Review in individual issues-but for this one.
Cheers,
Alex
