Everyone needs a copy of Lud Sibley's "Tube Lore"

"Besides the usual three-digit numbering, WE assigned "D-specification"
numbers to special tubes: Preliminary-production types, modified or
selected versions, low-usage types, etc."

"D-86326 Receiving triode, high-insulation 101D, discontinued after
improved production of 101D. (Used) in line amps of C2 carrier
telephone system."

If Gerry Tyne, "Saga of the Vacuum Tube," is right, this was 1921-ish.
