Thanks so much for everyone's input......One suggestion that I received was 
to use a rechargeable battery from a portable wireless phone which is close 
to the voltage that I need or to solder three AAA 1.5 volt batteries side by 
side and place in a shrink tube...this would give me the same diameter as 
the that of the 4.2 volt mercury battery and battery holder in the radio. I 
will try these options and report back to the club on my progress. Walter 
has agreed to do some research for me to ensure that I come up with the 
right voltage so as not to damage the delicate pencil tubes which may be 
very difficult to replace. It is a Crosley Model JM-8GNa and looks like a 
book. I can send some pics if anyone is interested.
