Hi Vic,
to avoid the battery pack from melting, Remove the battery clip, spring tab, etc solder then reattach to the holder. I have done this for other electronic projects. The benefit is, if you can fit it in, no more soldering in the future, as opposed to soldering batteries as they run out of power.
Good luck
BTW you can cannibalize these battery packs from a lot of battery operated electronics they sell at the dollar stores, for yes ONE dollar :) as opposed to $3 or $4 at radio shack.

Vic -
If you are going to go the battery holder route as you may have adequate > room, I have hundreds of triple AA battery holders and would be glad to send you one. Modifying a 4 holder to a 3 holder sounds like a good idea, but, is messy, and, soldering to the battery holder contacts will be tougher than soldering to the batteries, and, no doubt you will wind up melting the
holder before done. Let me know. - Mike

Hi Victor,
I was going to suggest the same thing Watt said, but you can cut down the 4 Cell AA holder from radio shack to 3 batteries, rewire that connection, then wire it into the radio.
Just my 2 cents...
