In addition - I should have mentioned that it is much easier to solder
batteries, if you run a file over the contacts first to remove some of the
plating. A touch of extra flux would not hurt either. The batteries will die
before any corrosion effect from the flux can take place. - Mike

Vic,

The trick here is to us an iron that can deliver a lot of heat to the 
work quickly:  big tip, high temperature.  Practice on some scrap 
cells.  You want to be able to make a good joint in just 2-3 seconds.

Hybrid portable radios are on the rare side.  Should be a keeper.
