Today is the fortieth anniversary of the day we saw those amazing live TV
images of man's first walk on the moon. To me, that was the coolest thing
EVER and it is defined as the single most important television image of
all time by a lot of folks.
At this past Early Television Convention, we got to meet the guy who was
responsible for developing the camera that made those images possible.
Stan Lebar headed the team at Westinghouse that designed and built the
Apollo 11 moon camera for NASA. There were some pretty crazy issues to
deal with. Did you know the cameras cost about a million dollars apiece?
The first ones were black and white only (but hear Stan talk about the
color adapter they designed but never used) and the resolution was lower
than a YouTube video. And they were thrown away as "space junk" at the
end of the mission? It was a real treat to get to talk with Stan there.
He was given a tour of the museum, and at the end of the tour he shared
some behind-the-scenes reminiscences about the camera and the event.

(The program begins with a tour of the Early Television Museum. The
interview with Stan begins at approximately 1 hour, 3 minutes in.)
Enjoy!
