Walt said he tried using (amplified) rabbit ears from Edison. At first 
nothing, then he added another old vhf amplifier and got a few  NYC 
stations. He also had freeze frame problems with channel 2 (WCBS TV).

I'm in Parsippany (over a minute's commute from our swapmeets!) and  about 30 miles as the crow flies from the Empire State Building. 

The analog pass-through feature will allow you to receive those stations still broadcasting analog after the cutoff date. The cutoff date only applies to "full powered" analog broadcasters. Low power stations will still be allowed to broadcast an analog signal for some time yet. And if you've got an antenna set up feeding your digital converter box it will be quite a bit more hassle (at least for the average viewer) to switch between the stations still broadcasting in analog and those in digital.
