Last night Herb Hobler gave a very interesting presentation on AM multiplexing using subcarriers to provide personalized information via his 'magic' radio. For those that missed it, check out the NJARC website for a rerun. One somewhat unrelated question came up about Herb's early career and training as a navigator on a B29 superfortress during WW II. His response was another very interesting talk involving the mechanics of the aircraft and associated instruments. He mentioned some of the problems of the early models of the B29 since there was a rush to build them without sufficient testing or evaluation.
I had seen a TV documentary about the B29 and they spoke about a problem with the engines overheating. A B29 made a stopover at an allied airbase in Russia but the Russians wouldn't let it take off and they confiscated it. They reportedly took it apart piece by piece and copied it to produce their own version. The Russian copy was identical to the US B29 even to the point where their engines overheated!
