[NJARC] Fwd: Put Your Thinking Caps On

Ray,

Some other items made by Lionel would be a nautical life saving device
and I believe they also manufactured a ships compass. As I recall hearing
some years ago, the now gone GM plant in Ewing made parts for the Brewster
Bomber. The Trenton-Mercer Airport, across the street, was a Naval Air
Station at the time.

Let's not forget the railroads and their radio equipment that served
the State and Nation at the time. PRR, Reading, Jersey Central,
Erie-Lackawanna, and the Lehigh Valley were the larger ones with many smaller lines as
well. The B&O had trackage rights through NJ via the Reading and Bound
Brook line.

On another thought, food was produced here as well. Campbells Soups
in Camden comes to mind. Anyone else have any thoughts along this line?

The NJ State Library would be a source to consult along with the NJ
State Museum archives for more information.

I hope this helps. Happy New Year to all.
Joe Devonshire

Hi Ray,

Regarding NJ companies:

According to my Dad, many Vineland-area clothing factories made uniforms
during the war. I'll have to see if I can get the names of some companies.
Most were started (and staffed by) Italian immigrants. Torsini was one. I
believe all those companies are defunct now.

And don't forget Lionel (HQ was in NYC, but factory was in Irvington).
They made code keys, relays, etc.

Regarding movies:

Woody Allen's "Radio Days" is a great flick in this regard.

Regards,

John
