The tube enthusiasts on the TCA reflector ultimately figured this was a gag.
One member pointed out that these tubes would work in space, but another
reminded him that the cathode coating would get poisoned before launching
could take place.
The posting got taken down early.

Was that a joke? That guy went to an awful lot of trouble to remove the
glass. I want to do just the opposite with some duds I have. Remove
the glass, silver it, put in another tube or transistor circuit and
replace the glass for a working and inexpensive display tube.
