Hi Scott,
You don't need the BFO for BCB DXing. Or any AM DXing, for that matter.
Why don't you bring that SX-16 tomorrow night and we'll see if we can finish it off? There's not that much to a BFO, so it shouldn't be that hard to troubleshoot....I hope. ;-)
Just bring a DVM and few basic tools.
