Hi all,
This is a big thank you to all club members who helped with their time,
expertise, or equipment to provide our War of the Worlds event with its
special kick: the live broadcast to period receivers. A special shout-out
goes to Al Klase and Darren Hoffman, who set up and shot troubles on
Thursday evening, and rode herd on the control board and transmitter during
Saturday's shows.
Although this year Al and Darren got that darn hum out of the system,
unfortunately we had more receiver problems. Fortunately we had plenty of
backups. I'll leave it to Al to offer a constructive post-mortem on radios
that work, and radios that Work. Not all issues can be anticipated, but
there are a number of procedures that will ensure more consistent and
durable public performance.
About 135 people enjoyed the broadcasts of the very fine performances by the
Hunterdon Radio Theatre, which had a smaller, and tighter, cast this year.
Extra thanks go to Bob Bennett, Sal Brisindi, Owen Gerboth, InfoAge, John
Tyminski, and Phil Vourtsis for loaning their babies to the show.
As much as I enjoy meeting the people who attend and seeing how much they
enjoy the experience, the four months it took to stage the Martians for
Education Festival and these performances raise serious issues of costs and
benefits to the Library. Having made it a festival only amplified my
burden, and the lack of publicity for individual events within the festival
demonstrates the drawbacks. It's not clear whether we'll stage this again
next year, but whatever happens I want you all to know how much the club's
efforts, collectively and individually, are appreciated. Having now worked
with a number of other organizations, I know you're two or three cuts above
most membership organizations.
Thanks,
Alex
