[NJARC] Website popularity

Well, we're a good bit behind AWA if you look at the actual page
rankings. Alexa is arguably the king of website monitoring and
documenting. It's an imperfect and imprecise science and some folks look
on their monitoring as something nefarious, or like spyware and opt out
of their monitoring. You have to have their software installed on your
computer in order for your web browsing to be directly counted, kind of
like being a "Nielson Family" with the box hooked up to your TV. They
also collect data about your site in other ways, but they may or may not
take a look at your website, and site owners can "opt out" of having them
measure and/or document a site, in which case they would have no
information on that site and it wouldn't show up in the rankings at all.
We're currently ranked just shy of being in the "top six million
websites," which hardly makes us a Nielson star but considering how many
websites there are (some say there may by as many as 108 million) we're a
heck of a lot nearer the top of the heap than the bottom. And within our
own strange, narrow little wedge of the universe (antique radio
collecting) apparently we're #2. Alexa reports AWA as being well within
the top three million, so we've got a couple of million rungs to climb on
that ladder before we could "displace" them. :-)
