Hi Scott.
If your rectifier tube had a blue glow before the meltdown, It was bad. 
Turning it on its' side or upside down could indeed have caused a short.
You asked for a schematic of the transformer. What you want is the RETMA 
color codes for transformer leads. You can probably Google that. The problem 
with this is that time and dirt have caused the colors to fade. In many 
cases making it difficult or impossible to determine the colors. The 
important codes  in a nutshell are:
Black= primary (Black/yellow for tap)
Red= high voltage (red/yellow for tap)
Yellow= 5 volt rectifier filiment (yellow/ blue for tap)
Green= 6 volt filiments 9green/yellow for tap)
Brown and Slate for additional filiments if used.
