Those looking for some historical background to why things and systems of things are the way they
are might enjoy Thomas Hughes's Networks of Power: Electrification in Western Society, 1880-1930
(www.amazon.com/Networks-Power-Electrification-1880-1930-Softshell/dp/0801846145). Available
through interlibrary loan at your library or the usual commercial outlets, the book is well
described in the reviews at Amazon. Hughes retired from power engineering to take up the history of
technology and became one of its biggest thinkers. But he doesn't forget the nuts and bolts in this
comparative history of electric power first in NYC, then in London, Berlin, and Chicago.
