[NJARC] Resistors

While we're on the subject of resistors, can somebody discuss the difference and preferences of various types of resistors, or point me to a resource for this information?  I'm aware of carbon composition, carbon film, metal oxide, and wirewound types but what is desirable and what was used in the past.  I assume these evolved just like capacitors and other parts.
