John and Scott,
Let's be careful with the 866AX substitutions. I'm concerned that the
AX's are somehow different from the common 866A's. The tubes in the amp
shown in the BAMA HT-41 manual have four pin bases, that rules out
3B21's unless you change sockets. (If they really are octals. There is
a non-mercury equivalent, but I can't remember the number.)
I can't find an 866AX data sheet. My concern is that they might be some
sawed-off version that stand less than 5 3/4" above the sockets like
866A's. Are the sockets recessed below the chassis?
866A's are real common. We should be able to dig some up for a couple
of bucks.
