John,
There were actually two consoles that had a pair of 45's in them.
One was a Edison model with a gorgeous pair of globe 45's. I think it went
for the princely sum of $12 or $15 for it. Not too shabby in anyones'
definition.
The other was a "Lyric" of possibly "Rudolph Wurlitzer" or "All American
Mohawk" lineage. I purchased that one, and still have to drag it out of my
station wagon to identify it. It too has PP 45's in it's output, but are of
the "ST"/coke bottle shaped variety.
Wifey: I can hear my wife: "What is THAT"?
Joe: What are you talking about honey?
Wifey: Don't tell me you brought home another radio! Where are you planning
on keeping it?
Joe: I don't know what you're talking about. It was always right there.
Wifey: You can't fool me, that's a new one
Joe: It was always there. You just didn't notice it. Stop picking on me!
When someone thinks they all look the same, it's time to take advantage of
it and use the above excuse. Unfortunately for me, my lovely understanding
wife is "wise" to my "tricks of the trade"
Buying an older house is a good idea. Any radio you happen to find was in
the attic. You just brought it down to work on!
Too many radios, too little time. Who could say no to a TRF set with PP 45
output?
The Edison was a definite "looker" and it's globe 45's were the icing on the
cake. The "Lyric" is more conventional, and in line with a few others I have
that resemble it. More easily blended into the herd, so to speak.
Let's see, I think Atlantic City Convention Hall was built in 1929, just the
right date for a large majority of my consoles and other sets. They'd blend
right in with the decor. I can hear it now:
Wifey: What did you bring home now?
Joe: Oh that. It's been here since 1929. You mean you havn't noticed it
before? The builder included it when the hall was built to provide
entertainment for people between conventions.... Good idea, no?
Regards,
Joe N3IBX
