[NJARC] A Blast from the past...

In the early '50s, my mother would drive us to the shore in her '39 Ford
and stop at the Avalon ice house to get a block loaded onto the front
bumper. Then we would go to the cottage and put it in the ice box.

The house I now live in started out as a summer house, log cabin built
in 1936. My Aunt didn't have electricity installed untill 1952 and I
had a well sunk in 1971. So I can remember the kerosene lights,
listening to music on the Victrola and hauling glass (apple cider)
bottles to the community well for water. Still have the kerosene lamps
and Victrola but don't miss hauling the water. And the community well
is still being used.

I don't remember the "ice man", but do remember the "rag man" and his
wagon in Philly. And I can remember reading the magazine section of the
Philadelphia Inquirer about replacing the horse drawn milk wagon with
trucks. The milk men were not happy about it since the horse would
follow them on their rounds. Now they have to retrace their steps to
get back to the truck

>Not only do I remember every one of those things, I remember that the levered metal ice cube tray was a new improvement over the older ones that you had to put warm water over, and bang them out onto the countertop. I even remember the "ice man" with a horse drawn wagon. We did not have an ice box however.
