There are several other Simpsons episodes with ham radio in them.

When Bart discovers a comet and joins the nerds, one of them introduces himself with, "my specialty is ham radio".

Homer escapes to the south Pacific as a missionary, and talks home on his ham radio(on 15 meters as you can read on the radio).

When Bart goes to France as an exchange student, the Albanian student who stays with the Simpsons sends the plans for the nuclear plant home using his ham radio in Bart's treehouse.
