Update...lol...
Swapping the tube seems to have helped: After allowing
the set to warm up about 1/2 hour, it was pulling in
all sorts of stations with reasonable volume, although
still with the burr I mentioned before. I even picked
up one near the 1600 area in Chinese! Weird... lol...

If I can get the burriness out, it should be a slick
set, and I can return it to my friend who asked me to
repair it. Now to figure how to hook up the meter and
signal generator and tune it up!
