John,
The design for loading was made so simple a child could use it (Phil,
have you heard that before?)...;) Do you know where your player has
been since 1984? If it's been bounced around figuratively and literally
I can well imagine the damage to whatever goes into ensuring stable
tracking of grooves 1/10,000th of an inch wide. When our CT-100 worked
we received video from our Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back discs that,
with Scott Marshall's tuning, struck me as VHS quality. Nor do we have
the beeps, whistles, rattles and hums you report. I think they carried
up to around 4 MHz of video output, and the dimensions in the inner
groove are arguably among the beginnings of nanotechnology.
