After three days of reviewing Radio-Electronics magazines from the 1950s
for an unrelated paper/article, I can tell you that for some time
Heathkit sponsored eight consecutive pages of ads for its kits of all
kinds; that Transvision was one of several other companies advertising
TV kits; that numerous articles discussed building your own and adapting
commercial TV receivers to your own cabinet or decor; and that in the
early 1950s a number of readers were very unhappy with the increased
focus on television (and its complexities) that Gernsback provided in a
"radio" magazine.
Sort of like the addition of software to hardware projects in the 1970s,
I imagine. Those of you looking to tinker into the future, or get kids
more involved with electronics, might find these sites of interest:
www.a-wit.com/web_c-stamp/index.htm
and a professor at TCNJ who teaches a number of courses involving a
variety of projects using microprocessors:

cheers,
Alex
