Edison's technician/mechanic, John Kruesi, doesn't get much recognition
either. Certainly he and others who build the conception/inventions
deserve inclusion on any team, and I'm shocked--shocked!--that John R.
would cite the A bomb as the initiation of modern systems R&D. The
monochrome electronic television precedes it, and Zworykin was always
careful to defer credit as the father or inventor of the latter since he
recognized fully his dependence on Flory, Ballard, Essig, Vance,
Leverenz, etc. to turn his patents into working and then production
devices.
I wish we had the transistor builder's name as it should replace
Shockley's in the initial invention. He was included by AT&T's
publicity as Bardeen and Brattain's supervisor but was not involved in
the point-contact's conception. He then jumped on the alloy-junction
that proved superior in various ways, if harder to fabricate
consistently.
