It may seem a stupid answer, but simple "pulse" and "tone" data were commonly 
transmitted by early hobby remote control which drove stepping switches, and 
garage door openers. which used a series of tones, to differentiate between 
openers, which may have been in the same locale.  Also, pagers were offered 
sometime around 1980 by the Bell System.... Im sure there are better examples 
tho...
