Hi Al,
You give me too much credit -- actually I was making a
joke (albeit a dumb one).
As a dedicated NJARC member, I REFUSE to recognize the
existence of solid-state devices! Except, of course,
for germanium diodes (useful for xtal sets and other
homebrews) and silicon diodes (useful for replacing
big, hot running, power-wasting rectifier tubes).
But, seriously, folks, the development of the
transistor and the integrated ckt is fascinating in
its own right. Recently found a book from 1963 called
"Microelectronics." One chapter on ICs was written by
Gordon Moore, of Moore's Law fame (and one of the
founders of Intel). What a visionary Moore was!
Ever see one of those big, old water towers that look
like a giant transistor? I've always been tempted to
climb up and paint "2N209" on the side.
Later,
JR
