I have converted a few old car radios by powering the filaments with either
6 v or 12 volts and putting 12 volts or 24 volts across the power
transformer where the vibrator connected. Of course we are talking AC!! I
think 10 amp or so would work. Even though the transformers in the radios
were operated at 100 hz or so they did not burn up. On such conversion is
still working on an old 56 Buick radio since about 1965!!

PS - If you get the old vibrator cooking as Al has suggested be sure you
have replaced the buffer cap that is across the secondary of the xformer or
you will destroy the vibrator quickly!

Derm,
Do you have the original vibrator? It's fairly easy to "wake up" and
old vibrator.
