Hello group,
As many of you may be aware by my somewhat naive question, I am a newbie. It
all started with a 1933 Beverly lowboy console and last weekend I just
couldn't help myself I went flea marketing and found a Philco 42-321. Now
whenever I have had a little time I have been tinkering with both.
Well tonight I can say I experience an old dead beat-up radio being brought
back to life. What a feeling! My first!
And more than just the electronics, which I do everyday at work (albeit 70
some odd years newer) I have been doing a cabinet restoration. The way I
figured it, the $5 radio was a good practice for more valuable models.
So I glued the cabinet back together, striped the veneer, went to Lowes and
found some wood veneer, cut it, installed it, stained it, and varnished it.
Oh by the way, somebody before me had painted the whole cabinet black! I
think doing the wood work was more satisfying. It looks real nice.
My only present problem is the volume is a bit low. But then again I still
have a few caps to replace and a few of the tubes checked a bit low, but it
works! No more buzz anymore but I found it interesting someone replaced the
two schematic 20 mF filters with a all-in-one 30 mF and 50 mF. I wonder why?
Now I am not to sure but a little more is probably ok but that is a lot
more. I am trying to figure out what that would do. Maybe overstress the
rest of the system?
Anyway, thanks to all the help, I do appreciate it.
Edward
