[NJARC] Boat Anchors

I have a winter project I will probably never get to, a National NC 109. It
is a real project. It does not work. The tuner needs restringing. The
case is solid, but it has exterior rust on one side. If anyone is
interested for $20, I am located in northeast NJ (Oradell). I can be
reached at w.d.radio at miked.org.
Thanks,
Bill

Ray,
You did a superb job serving as host and tour guide for Arthur Anderson
and Charles Osgood in the museum yesterday. You spoke knowledgeably and
personably and you made the organization look good. Sincere thanks are in
order!

Check out eBay auction # 320025083125. If you buy these caps, I suppose
you also have to use Western Electric solder to install them :-) !

Could someone comment on these 'bumble bee' caps (John Ruccolo?). I've seen
them and have some but don't know anything about them. Nick Senker

It is a strange phenomenon with the audiophiles, the leakiest of capacitors
seem to be the most desirable, they claim the sound "warmer", then again,
anything that out of spec will sound "warm". I rebuilt a wire recorder about
a year
ago for a gentelmen in california. The unit was sent in with complaints of
"smoke" . I replaced all of the wax capacitors (good alls I believe)
including
one that was shorted and burnt. The unit worked beautifully, I sent it back
to
the gentelman, Though he was happy with the work, he claimed the rebuild had
ruined the "warm" sound of his recorder, and that it sounded just too good!
Amazing how awful new , accurate capacitors sound!

I posted that note after I saw someone else wondering about it. A quick
search just now seems to indicate that the .022 mfd units are the
"correct" tone capacitors for the original Gibson Les Paul guitar. They
are apparently highly sought after.
Nick, they say "buy low, sell high". I'm no investment advisor, but my
advice would be to sell NOW. I'm going down to look through the parts
cabinet! :-)

P.S. Info about the upcoming the restoration clinic is now on the
website.

I'm looking to squirrel away a few boatanchor projects for those long
winter
nights that will be upon us all too soon. If you have anything you think I'd
like,
please contact me. I'm located in the Morristown area.
Here's the type of thing I'm looking for:
1. R-390A, preferably in working condition (this is No. 1 on my wanted
list);
2. WWII general-coverage receivers (I'm especially intrigued by the Navy
receivers. However, Army sets are great, too);
3. Hammarlund Super Pro; and
4. National HRO or NC 2-40D.
My prior requests on this list have netted me some nice radios. Even
better,
I've gotten to know people such as Ray Chase, Al Klase, Bill Pileggi and
Mike
Feher.
