Hello John,
I'd be more than glad to tell you about the Western Electric
451A-1 broadcast transmitter I have! As a matter-of-fact, if you or any
NJARC members would like to come over to see it, you're more than welcome.
When I finally move it into my basement hamshack, you're VERY more than
welcome - hi!
What I have is a Western Electric model 451A-1 250W broadcast transmitter
built in 1940 or 1941. It uses a sextet of WE 242C's in a low level gridleak
bias modulation scheme. The WE 242C's are very similar to a conventional 211
tube, except the WE tubes have a mu of 12.5 vs 12.0 of a 211, and the WE
tubes don't have a graphite anode.
The WE 451A-1 and it's accompaning 702C crystal oscillator are capable of
going from 550KC to 2750KC "right out of the box" as they say. This ishould
make it easy to operate in the 160M Amateur band, as I plan to use it
crystal controlled on 1885KC.
Please email me at: n3ibx at verizon.net for pictures, or you can find a few
listed in the "Western Electric" section of the Antique Radio Forum at:
http://antiqueradios.com/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=Western_Electric
Many thanks for asking, and you're more than welcome to stop over to look at
it, and after I have it on the air, you'll be more than welcome to operate
it on the air. I currently have a Gates BC1-T up and running on 1885KC as
well, and a few others in the works.
Very Best Regards,
Joe Cro N3IBX
