Steve,
         A "52" is a tetrode, and a  "852" is a triode. It was also known as 
a UV-852, a "75W" triode that came out about 1928. They were quite 
revolutionary at the time since you could make them work on the higher 
frequencies like 20 or 10 Meters.

A 852 was sometimes called a "52" for simplicity sake, but had nothing to do 
with a real #52 tetrode.

Regarding a "special" 52, I'm not familiar with anything except maybe a 
VT-52, which is very different from a UV-852.

I'm not sure what the filament material on a UV-852 was, but would take a 
guess that they used a thoriated tungsten filament.
