Finally- something positive to report! The other night
I discovered I had put the wrong value capacitor in
three places- caps 6,13, and 15. What should have
gotten a .047(replacing a .05) instead had .0047! I
must have been tired when I was writing my notes,
because I referenced back to my original shop notes
and orders, and found I had indeed made this mistake.
I replaced all three last night, and put it all back
together. After a little tube swapping, and
realignment work, I can now say I do have operations
on both SW bands and the entire BC band!
(And literally minutes after I finished aligning the
set, my frequency counter arrived, so I can make sure
the RF generator is set up correctly...lol... Well,
the frequency counter itself needs an overhaul... It
must have sat a while: the usual radio issues, minus
the mouse... I'll clean her up, and see what she does.
)
So, the bands are all reasonably well aligned, I have
definite reception, and I will put her back into her
cabinet after a few hours run testing. I only had two
brand new caps to put in(the third hasn't arrived yet)
but I found I had an NOS Sangamo of the right value in
stock, and it checked ok, so I put that in for now.
I'll swap the other one in when it gives up, if ever.
I adjusted everything by the book, although step 3 for
both SW bands was skipped: I have never mastered that
one. Once I had BC working correctly, I tweaked the
highest and lowest stations into proper position, and
all the rest fell into place.
Thanks, everybody, for all the help!
Scott
"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings that thinks nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing he cares about more than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." John Stuart Mill, 'The Contest in America', Feb. 1862
