John, John, and everyone else that lived it.

It would be fun to know what everyone's novice rigs were.

Mine was a Globe HG-303 with VFO(We were no longer rockbound in 1976 when I
got my ticket) and a Lafayette HA-30(If I remember the model right) The
general coverage receiver had a Q-multiplier, and I got around the lack of
bandspread by hooking up a counter to the LO, and mentally subtracted 455.
The only piece I wish I still had is the counter, which had RCA Numitrons
for the readout.

No doubt Dilks' rig of 50 years ago was much cooler.

I won't tell how I blew the plate transformer on the Globe(not without
pumping a few beers into me), but a funny novice error followed. I didn't
really understand the whole RMS thing, so I replaced the transformer with
one with an RMS output equal to the DC voltage that the old one put out
into a capacitor-input filter, giving about 40 percent extra voltage. It
didn't fit, being larger, so I ran it outboard. That 6146 really glowed
with a key down time limit of about 2 seconds before the plate turned
yellow.
