Alex,
Thank you for the advise. Darren Hoffman sent along some information
that relates to my problem.

 >>> If the tape is made by ampex and is 1/4" wide, my machine wont play it.
It sounds like you have a tape made on an AKAI 1/4" video recorder. Most of
the common reel to reel recorders of the 70s ran 1/2" tape, which is what my
Sony runs. Ampex made a machine which if I remember correctally uses 1" tape.
The only 1/4" reel to reel video machines were made by AKAI, for portable
camera use and used standard 1/4" audio tape hence the Ampex brand tape. I have
seen only one of those machines in person and that was about 10 years ago .<<<

So it looks like my problem continues. This looks like a swap meet item to
explore for. In the meantime, thank you for your thoughts. I guess we waited
too long to view this tape.

Regards,
Joe Devonshire

Two possibilities from people who do this for a living:

Ray Hallows, 609-924-3468 in Pennington, is a former RCA engineer who
runs a tape-conversion service who might be able to help. He has a
2-inch RCA videotape machine.

Hagens Recording Studio in Princeton does transfers from Umatic, I
believe: call for more details, 609-452-2127.

best,
Alex
