Do the dial markings agree with the stations you hear above 1000kc?
Might be a tracking problem.
Something else to look into is a bent tuning capacitor plate or some
debris between the plates. As the frequency is lowered, more capacitance
is needed, so more of the rotor goes into the stator. Might also check
to see if there is some sort of interference between the two capacitor
plates. Lastly it could be the bearings of the rotor or some
intermittent high resistance contact of the rotor to the frame of the
capacitor. Some rotors have a spiral metal strap that connects the rotor
to the frame, check to see if it is OK.
