Hi Ray,

You've hit upon one of my fevorite subjects. I assumne
of course, that I was the "JR" that you were referring
to. Lazy bones that I am, I let my lcense lapse. And
you're right, I do need to "go for it."

But I do get tired of people insisting that a no-code
license will doom amatuer radio. It's simply not the
case. With all due respect to all of you CW operators
out there, the CW requirement had become nothing more
than an arcane barrier to entering ham radio. The
hobby needed to change with the times. Don't get me
wrong -- I wish they had kept a 5 WPM code
requirenemt. But nothing beyond that. Make everybody
learn a little bit of code (like I did twice
previously, in the 70's and again in the 90's). Those
that become proficient at it will increase their speed
and will have a lifetime of enjoyment on CW. For most
of the rest of us, we'll operate CW once in a great
while, but the primary reason I want to renew my
license is to operate vintage AM gear. Who knows, I
might even get a 2M HT someday. SSB is fine, of
course, if you like how everybody sounds like a robot
or Donald Duck or Walter Brennan. Or maybe that's just
my HQ-170....

With proper monitoring and enforcement from the FCC,
the "crackpot factor" can be minimized. Yes, there
will be a few, but they will get weeded out over time.

Later,

JR
