Is there any chemical which is safe to use to get rid of that stuff
properly
or should I use the old soapy warm water treatment?

I use full strength amonia on battery acid. Sometimes the corosion wipes
right off. I do not know if this is good for old battery formulas but it sure
can work well on some more recent ones.

Amonia makes a good mild paint remover too.

Make sure it is a fresh bottle. I think the stuff loses potency. Maybe it
absorbs moisture from the air.

I DO NOT KNOW IF THE COMBINATION CAN HURT YOU. DO IT IN THE OPEN AIR ETC.

Please report back how it worked for you.
