The 1957 Golden Hawk is a lovely automobile; a good friend of mine in the
Studebaker Drivers Club has one and it is very fast.
The 57 Golden Hawk is equipped with the Studebaker 289 CID V8 with 4BBL
carburetor and McCollough supercharger. The blower plus 4barrel makes the
engine develop 289BHP at 5100 RPM. That's one horsepower for each cubic inch
of displacement which was phenominal at the time! The Studebaker V8 was
light and responsive, and the vehicle itself weighed in at about 2900 lbs,
so it was a very potent performer!!
A friend of mine in Massachusetts has a 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk. The 56
Golden Hawk however, was equipped with a Packard 352 CID V8 producing 278
horsepower. Alas, the Packard engine was a few hundred pounds heavier and
the result was it compromised handling at speed, although the car was
certainly peppy enough on the straightaway!
Best wishes,
-George-
