Hi Jim,

The problem you're having is pretty typical.  In many houses the 
electrical wiring, plumbing, and heating ducts form a pretty effective 
faraday shield around your radio, leaving you with low signal strength. 
Then the various noise sources become apparent.   The best solution is 
an outside antenna with a shielded lead-in.  There are small active 
antennas that will do the job if you don't have a place for a wire 
antenna.  (That's the setup we have at the Marconi cottage.

I don't think blindly investing in a line conditioner is a good move.
