Jim -
About 3 years ago, I upgraded my home electrical service (new
breaker panel, new wiring, etc.). My electrical contractor suggested
installing a "line conditioner/ surge supressor to my panel. Since I have
old radios / sensitive electronics, I went for it. In storms / power
outages, it does work. As far as supressing, I've gone through the exact
dilemma on some of my radios. What worked for me was in the case of external
antennas, I used coax to the 2 antennas in my attic (my better half is a
little sensitive about outdoor antennas). The other is using a ground (if
the radio is so equipped). I'm not sure if a $135 dollar line conditioner
may be the fix, but this is what worked for me.

my radio's speakers when I have it plugged into my wall socket. When I use
battery power to listen to the same station there is virtually no noise.
