Folks,
This is an excellent discussion. I'm glad Tom Lee
brought this up. The incident that Tom is referring to
was an unusual one, and fortunately is the exception.
It was partly my fault, because I should have told
those folks after 10-15 minutes that we needed to move
on. Those blue-bloods were trying to pick everybody's
brain about their radio, as if they were going to be
able to retire on the proceeds.
I agree with Steve, and I appreciate his idealistic
views. But it is distasteful to me to be providing a
FREE volunteer service, as a member of a NON-profit
organiztion, and to be working with some jerk who's
only interest is getting a free repair job so that he
can get a better price for his set. However, I do
agree that this had been the exception rather than the
rule, fortunately.
Anyway, enough of that. Here's what I propose:
-- Evaluations and appraisals of customer sets should
always be FREE. If the repair is really simple, that
can be free too, at the discretion of the "tech."
-- HOWEVER, if we have to do any REAL repair work, we
should ask for a donation of $10, to be split between
NJARC and Sarnoff (or InfoAge, if the clinic is
there). Why? Two reasons: 1) we deserve it, and 2)
this will hopefully discourage at least a few selfish
opportunists.
I have seen the looks of genuine appreciation on the
faces of people who had family heirlooms repaired.
Many have made donations, some were very generous.
*Any* donation was appreciated. Steve's right -- we do
generate a lot of good will with the clinics. But
maybe we need to be just a little smarter about how we
do them.
Regards,
Mr. Capacitor
