Hi Steve,

#2 - The tool is called a piece of galvanized water pipe.  Fill the 
copper tubing with fine sand or salt or something like that. Crimp 
the ends and wind away.  Choose a pipe slightly smaller in diameter, 
as the turns will unwrap some.  Take out the sand after it's wrapped.

Early handbooks around 1925 to 1935 show how to do this.
