Hello All,
The Asbury Park Press printed a story on our dedication. See:
http://www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?Category=NEWS01
It was a hot but excellent event. The surviving 110V old window
air-conditioners, a new one from Mike and Barb Ruane and a new Infoage
one were running for days to pre-cool the building. It worked, the 92
year old building was comfortable. The food and refreshments purchased
with a gift by Roger McLaughlin was enjoyed by all. The music and
sound system provided and operated by Tom Ruane made the atmosphere just
right. The color guard and the driving Assemblyman Corodemus in a WW2
command car with armed WW2 guards was impressive. The WW2 jeep and
'Duck' parked on the grass were excellent touches. Our handouts and
booklets from the Olde Wall Historical Society were given to each visitor.
Mike Ruane did a great job as MC, Rev. Applegate and State
Assemblyman Steve Corodemus gave excellent messages to the veterans.
The 'Camp Evans" medals pinned on the veterans by State Assemblyman
Corodemus and his personal thank you to each veteran was touching and
meaningful.
All found the over 100 Camp Evans and Signal Corps roll in WW2
posters we created from Camp evans photos given to us over the years abd
the Radio News issues Ray Chase lent us and the dozens of WW2 period
posters educational. The WW2 artifacts and and history posters in the
dining room wing supplied by the Olde Wall Historical Society looked great.
All the help by Dave Snellman, Dawn and Gary Crawford, Valdis Paupe,
Warren Cochran, Bob Judge, Karin Carl, Evans Koblentz, Barb, Mike and
Tom Ruane and many others made the event and crowds flow.
The site looked good thanks to lots of help cited below and the last
minute help Friday night and Saturday morning by Evan Koblentz and Jim
of MARCH who set up the display cases Rich O. of the GSC got for us from
Princeton University surplus. Professor Robert Johnson Jr. drove in
from Connecticut and helped arrange the artifacts, helped with last
minute clean-ups and Robert even filmed the event. Warren Cochran was
fixing lights and anything he could put a pipe wrench on or climb upto
with a ladder. Warren is a WW2 vet who landed on Iwo Jima.
Wall Township DPW was great. They lent us a stage and set it up, they
sweep the parking lot and street three times to make sure it was
perfect, lent us an American flag for the stage and even put a new rope
on the Camp Evans flag poll. Camp Evans has a flag flying over it for
the first time in nearly 10 years. Fort Monmouth DPW mowed the grass
and removed piles of dirt from the parking lot and streets. The Wall
BOE delivered 100 folding chairs and every single one was put to use.
Mark Casner of C&H Plumbing made sure we had a working men's and
lady's restroom. This was a feat as during the winters the heat was off
pipes split and fixtures split so lots of repair and replacement was
needed. He even had to make some repairs in the terra cotta walls
besides the many in the basement.
Thanks to all we had the chance to thank our veterans and pledge to
them that we will save Camp Evans as a memorial to their deeds,
ingenuity and sacrifices. They were touched. It was the right thing
to do.
Thank you,
Fred
