Hi Nick,
The system of tuning by moving a slug in and out of a coil is often known
as permeability tuning.  If I remember right, someone brought in a cute
Blonder-Tongue FM tuner that used that system as well, so maybe Mr. Tongue
can tell us about its merits.  The US Navy TBK transmitter of the mid-30s
uses it.  I think one advantage is that you can wind the coil in such a way
to make the frequency change very linearly with the position of the plunger.
