Hi Bob,

First thing to check:

Vintage car radios typically have an external antenna 
trimmer adjustment near the antenna socket.  Tune the radio 
to a station near the top of the band, and tweak the trimmer 
fo maximum output.  This needs to be done for the particular 
antenna and cable to be used.
