Did't really mean that 170's are junk.  I was cautioning 
against an inexperienced technician trying to fix a radio by 
"aligning"  it.  I'd want to narrow things down a bit before 
  I started diddling things.

There are other complications. Like knowing if your 
generator is really on 60KC when you start in on that 3rd IF.
