Hi Tom,

To echo John Dilks' comment, I wouldn't get too excited 
about finding a variac.  I rarely use mine.  When the $5 one 
shows, up grab it.  The "bring it up slow on a variac" 
method of restoration really isn't too sophisticated, and 
has some definite shortcomings.

What you might need is an isolation transformer if you're 
going to work on AC-DC sets.  But, even this, isn't an 
absolute requirement if you're ABSOLUTELY sure which side of 
the line cord is "hot".

Watch for the next NJARC repair clinic and attend.
