Phil,
I hope everyone had fun and got the best deal at
the swapmeet Sunday.
Please accept my apologies for not responding earlier
as promised about the July 19 Radio Day, but it's become the subject of
discussion not only with Jinny Baeckler and radiophysicist Russell
Hulse, but an events promoter for WDVR
and the Institute for Arts and
Humanities. Those latter two probably won't have much to do with
this first event in "David Sarnoff's Science Series," but they and the
NJARC will have more opportunities as we continue to develop programming.
Consider this a warm-up, or introduction, for Central
NJ families to see the David Sarnoff Library and a cool program before
doing more concentrated follow-ups on various aspects of generating, sending,
and sensing sound, electricity, and light.
Here's what we've proposed for Saturday, July 19:
In the Lounge, the NJARC Radio Clinic, open to anyone
who wants help restoring an heirloom or old crystal set by appointment.
In the Auditorium, the Radio Show and Tell, or Radio
Day (Hands-on History of Innovation didn't quite sing). Here's an
opportunity for Club members to show off their specialties to non-specialists.
We can set up 10-12 tables in the Auditorium and 2 more in the museum or
possibly the reading room for show and tell, what makes it work, what will
it do, test your tubes-type demos. These would be open 10-4.
Al and Joe or others also working the Clinic can specify a couple of demo/show
times that will be announced in the press releases. Otherwise, it's
a walk-through, "living history" museum (apologies to Rob Flory and Howell
LH Farm), where numbers oscillate from 0 to 10 at any given moment over
five hours. The Library will pick up Lunch and snack costs for those
committing to the six hours.
Jinny will send out her release to the Packet newspapers
and website, the Princeton On-line website, Princeton Town Topics, Home
News, US1, Trentonian, and Trenton Times, as well as the coverage the Club
offers. If you visit the Plainsboro
Library site, you'll see that Jinny has quite a bit of experience in
family affairs, and we won't be a daycare centers for vagrant suburban
children.
What we need now are for members to send their table
idea to Jinny (email above), copied to me, by Monday, June 30. That
gives us just under three weeks to stir the pot and pump up the volume
in Mercer and Middlesex Counties.
Does that sound doable?
best,
Alex
